The Young Elites of the Eastern Shore West to East Coast Aviation Network (aka Y.E.E.S. W.E. C.A.N.) is a pathways program co-founded by Cheryl A. Walker, a native to Maryland Eastern Shore, and Ms. Elina Peoples (1957-2020).
In 2014, Ms. Cheryl was invited to chaperone the East Coast Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen Inc. Youth in Aviation program. Here, she witnessed her son and several young students introduction to the world of aviation. After seeing the students reaction to learning new topics and enjoying new experiences, Ms. Cheryl and Ms. Elina were inspired to bring a similar program to their own community!
Working in Somerset County, Maryland, Ms. Cheryl noticed a need for community growth and development. Today Y.E.E.S. W.E. C.A.N. looks forward to expanding our collaborative partnerships to provide additional opportunities for the youth in our communities.
Our high school students have even been invited by NASA to apply to their summer internship program.
Since partnering with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), Y.E.E.S. W.E. C.A.N. holds regular biweekly sessions during the school year on the UMES campus. Instruction includes subjects and concepts such as aviation science, drone pilot training, coding lessons, computer hardware, electronics and robotic projects, 3D printing, cybersecurity, financial literacy and individual/team leadership development activities. Additionally, a standard and advanced mathematics classes is required for every Elite in the program.
